Buildings have a major role to play in addressing climate change. Buildings consume one third of final energy use worldwide and over 20% of global man-made Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing energy consumption in buildings through increased energy efficiency will provide a significant contribution to ensuring the rise in global temperatures is limited to under 2°C. Improving energy efficiency in buildings is also a business opportunity for growth; it also delivers economic and social benefits such as creating jobs, improving health and productivity, improving utility capacity management, and reducing pressure on public budgets.

The WBCSD launched in 2013 the second phase of its Energy Efficiency in Buildings project (EEB2.0). EEB2.0 is about action: how Business is Taking action in their own buildings and how Business is Leading action locally to remove market barriers.

Business Leading Action

The Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB 2.0) project has piloted 10 local private sector-led multi-stakeholder engagements (“EEB Laboratories”) to develop  action plans that address the key barriers for energy efficiency in buildings:

1. lack of awareness and leadership particularly related to challenges in making the business case;
2. workforce capacity and the need for proper skills and collaboration along the value chain to implement the right solutions;
3. lack of adequate financing models; and
4. lack of consistent and long-term policy frameworks (national and sub-national), including regulations and incentive schemes.

Scaling up local action plans across the globe!

The EEB2.0 project will be working in 2016 with global and local partners to multiply market engagements around the world. Interested partners can look at two supporting documents:

How to carry out market engagements?” covers the methodology developed by the WBCSD EEB2.0 project in 10 pilot local engagements.

The Roadmap to EEB

During its first phase of work from 2006 to 2010, the EEB 1 project looked into the building sector’s role within the international energy efficiency landscape.

Buildings’ energy efficiency is critically important to address climate change and EEB1 offered recommendations and roadmap to contribute to the needed wake-up call.
